The Observation Bee Hive
What’s better than surfing the web or watching Netflix? Having your very own observation bee hive of course! Whether you are a newbee or a long time veteran beekeeper an observation bee hive is the coolest addition to any home. Provided of course you put it in a room where your wife does not shoot you for putting it in the WRONG place. I would consult with her first and make sure it is in a place where it can please everyone. We put ours in our basement rec room / Beekeeping 101 class room.
I first saw an observation bee hive when I was about 10 years old in a family owned general store. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. When I was told there was one bee that was bigger than all the others called the “queen bee”, that gave me even more motivation to keep watching until I could spot her. Hey what can I say…….this was the time BEFORE video games and the internet. But even now having just installed our observation hive in the rec room, the rest of our family members and friends can’t resist spending several minutes just checking it out from time to time. Even some of our guests that have no real interest in bees find out that they really are in fact very interesting creatures, and can’t help themselves from watching the same as I did as a kid.
If you’ve ever thought of having one in your home I thought I’d give you some of the pros and cons to help you make a good choice if you decide to take the plunge. First the pros:
1. They are just plain cool, everyone else has fish – not you!
2. You can watch the bees without disturbing them
3. As a beekeeper you can see if they are bringing in forage
4. You can observe comb construction
5. You can sharpen your queen spotting skills
6. By observing what is happening in the observation hive, you can get a good gauge on what your yard bees are doing as well
There are probably many more reasons that you can think of too. But I think you get the idea. But here are a few cons to be aware of too:
1. You’ll have to cut a hole in you wall or construct a window port entrance ( I chose the window port entrance for mine )
2. You will have to take it outside to do any maintenance
3. Most observation hives are too small to house a full size colony so you’ll have to build your own if you want enough room to do it right (see my video, below )
4. They are a bit expensive unless you build your own
If you opt to build your own make sure you have a way to feed them if necessary and have a door to get easy access for maintenance. Use correct bee space 3/8” in between frames and install vents so you don’t get moisture build up.
Since keeping bees is an education in itself, you will find it to be a huge advantage in your learning curve. So if you’ve ever given thought to putting one in your home I hope these tips will help you make a good decision so that you too can enjoy beekeeping!

Warning To All Parents: Don’t Let Your Children Eat Rice Cakes!!!
According to a new study, these products are loaded with dangerous levels of a carcinogenic substance.
The study was conducted by the Swedish National Food Agency.
After examining 102 rice products available on the market, this Agency in some of these were discovered high levels of arsenic, which is a known carcinogen.
Due the results of this study and taking them into consideration, the food safety organization revised its dietary recommendations on rice.
Rice or rice products such as rice porridge, rice noodles, or breakfast cereal made of puffed rice like (Rice Crispies, for instance) should not be consumed by children more than four times a week (?). Rice cakes contain the most arsenic, which is why these shouldn’t be given to children under the age of six.
Emma Halldin Ankarberg is toxicologist at the Swedish National Food Agency. Regarding this problem she says: “Many children eat rice cakes as a snack, but unfortunately we must advise against this. Other countries are also giving this advice. For everyone else, rice cakes are ok in moderation, but it depends on the amount of rice products consumed overall”.
If you are consuming a lot of rice, for example more than seven times a week, should cut down on their rice intake as they’re exposing themselves at a risk of ingesting a lot of arsenic.
MORE ABOUT ARSENIC AND RICE
Arsenic in the natural process appears in the soil and bedrock and is absorbed by plants. It seems that rice is especially open to absorbing and storing high levels of arsenic.
Many scientific studies have proven that this element is carcinogen which, if ingested in large quantities, can lead to tumors in the skin, lungs, bladder, as well as the liver, kidneys and prostate. In addition, continual exposure to arsenic can also contribute to a number of other health issues including cardiovascular disease, liver damage, chronic cough, diabetes and neurological effects. Children have highest risk.
In the last years, there is a lot of attention pointed to the presence of arsenic in baby rice and rice products. According this study, there were different levels of arsenic in rice depending on the variety, cultivation area, cultivation methods, and production methods. As an example – whole grains generally contain more arsenic than refined rice.
