In 1936, a family of Russian Old Believers journeyed deep into Siberia's vast taiga to escape persecution and protect their way of life. The Lykovs eventually settled in the Sayan Mountains, 160 miles from any other sign of civilization. In 1944, Agafia Lykov was born into this wilderness. Today, she is the last surviving Lykov, remaining steadfast in her seclusion. In this episode of Far Out, the VICE crew travels to Agafia to learn about her taiga lifestyle and the encroaching influence of the outside world.

THE COMMUNISTS WERE TRYING TO DO THE SAME IN GERMANY IN 1933!
Considered one of nature's best sources of full-spectrum vitamin C, camu camu berries are compact, nutritious berries that grow in the Amazon rainforest. Known for their natural abundance of vitamin C, these superfruits have been traditionally used by the natives as a source of nutrition and natural remedies.
Derived from the fresh berries of the Myrciaria dubia plant grown in the rich soils of Peru, Groovy Bee® Organic Camu Camu Powder is an amazing superfood that contains high levels of vitamin C, as well as flavonoids, anthocyanins and other potent antioxidants. This light brown powder has a slightly tangy flavor that tastes delicious in fruit smoothies, homemade ice creams and other snacks and beverages. Use it to support your body’s natural immune defenses and support healthy eyes, skin and digestion. Groovy Bee® Organic Camu Camu Powder contains no gluten, GMOs, artificial flavors, sweeteners or added fillers and is certified Kosher and organic. It is also non-irradiated, non-China and thoroughly lab tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbiology.
NOTE: Did you know over 90% of the vitamin C market in the United States is dominated by China and is derived from GMO corn? Getting your daily vitamin C intake through highly bioavailable Camu Camu is one of the best ways to avoid this issue! There are no known GMO variants of Camu Camu, and the majority of Camu Camu on the market comes from South America.

Camu camu berries are the purple and yellow, cherry-sized drupes that grow on the Myrciaria dubia shrub, which is native to the rainforests of Peru and Brazil. Also known as “camocamo” or “cacari,” the camu camu plant is a relative of the rumberry, or guavaberry, plant. For generations, Amazonian natives have used camu camu berries to create a variety of health-supporting poultices, tonics and other natural remedies.
Known for their natural abundance of vitamin C, camu camu berries are also used as food and are often turned into delicious jams, jellies, ice creams, candies, juices and other sweet snacks and beverages. In Japan, camu camu has become a popular ingredient in energy and sports drinks, as well as other refreshing beverages. You can incorporate camu camu powder into your daily routine to support your body’s natural immune defenses and support eye, skin and digestive health.
When it comes to vitamin C and flavonoid content, few superfruits can come close to matching the levels found in camu camu berries. In fact, an article that was published in the journal Food Research International found that a 100 g serving of camu camu berries can provide approximately 1,882 to 2,280 mg of pure vitamin C. This easily exceeds the amount found in other vitamin C-rich fruits, such as cloudberries, acai berries and Barbados cherries. Camu camu also contains:
200x more vitamin C than bananas
60x more vitamin C
than oranges
56x more vitamin C than lemons
30x more vitamin C than kiwis
As for flavonoids, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, camu camu berries have great antioxidant potential due to their natural abundance of flavonoids, such as anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds. Additionally, the study demonstrated that the main flavonoids present in camu camu berries are kaempferol and quercetin derivatives.
While primarily known for their high vitamin C content, camu camu berries contain a multitude of other beneficial vitamins and minerals, such as dietary fiber, protein, iron, manganese, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and B vitamins like niacin, thiamin and riboflavin.
Compared to oranges, gram for gram, camu camu berries contain:
10x more iron
2x more riboflavin
50% more phosphorus
3x more niacin
Additionally, camu camu berries are loaded with carotenoids, such as lutein, beta carotene and zeaxanthin, as well as amino acids like serine, valine and leucine.
“Camu camu is nature's most potent source of full-spectrum vitamin C. Certified organic from the pristine soils of rural Peru, this camu camu has a slightly tangy taste. I love to use it in smoothies for some extra full-spectrum vitamin C. A little of this powder goes a long way.”
